How many countries are there in the world?
There are 195 countries in the world: the 193 member states of the United Nations and the 2 observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. This is the list this tool uses.
Other lists give different numbers because they also count territories with a lot of autonomy or partial recognition, such as Taiwan, Kosovo, Greenland or Puerto Rico. That is why some travellers say they have been to more than 195 “countries”: they add territories that are not independent states.
What counts as a visited country?
There is no official rule; each traveller decides. The most common rule is to have set foot in the country outside the airport: a layover without leaving usually does not count, a day trip does. What matters is always using the same rule, so your number stays honest.
How many countries does a person visit?
Most people only get to know a few countries in their lifetime. More than 30 countries is already a lot, and very few people pass 100. More than the number, the best part is remembering where you were and who you were with.
From countries to cities
Counting countries is only the beginning. In Turi you can also mark the cities and towns you have visited (there are more than 69,000), with dates, notes and photos, and see your map in 2D and 3D. In the app, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are shown separately, as many travellers like.
